Self-Managed Global Teams

You manage the team. We handle employment, offices, HR, and compliance.
All team members work from ITBD-owned facilities in India and the Philippines.

WHAT SELF-MANAGED MEANS

Your Team. Your Leadership. Our Infrastructure.

Self-managed global teams are designed for MSPs that want to scale their organization without scaling costs at the same rate. You bring the leadership and direction. We provide the employment, infrastructure, and operational foundation that makes global teams work. In this model, your MSP leads the team and owns the outcomes. That means you set the priorities, you manage the people, you define what success looks like.
IT By Design handles everything behind the scenes that makes it possible: secure offices, HR, payroll, compliance, talent acquisition support, and the day-to-day operational environment your team works in.

No blurred accountability. Your MSP leads. IT By Design supports. The line is clear and stays that way as you scale.

CSAT across global teams

Co-managed isn’t a halfway measure. It’s a complete delivery operation running inside your model, with ITBD’s management layer keeping it accountable.

WHO THIS MODEL IS FOR

Built for MSPs Ready to Scale Teams Deliberately

The self-managed model is not designed for adding one or two people over time and seeing how it goes. It’s built for MSPs that are ready to invest in structured team growth from the start, with the leadership capacity to make it work.

Self-managed teams succeed when leadership responsibility is clear and owned from day one. If you're not ready to lead at this scale yet, the co-managed model is a strong starting point, and many MSPs transition to self-managed over time as they grow.

UNIT ECONOMICS AND COST STRUCTURE

Predictable Economics at Organizational Scale

Instead of building your own global infrastructure from scratch, which is expensive, slow, and full of surprises, you operate on IT By Design’s established offices, systems, and operational foundation. That gives you cost predictability and economic leverage from day one.

Clear, Role-Based Cost Visibility

For every team member, costs are structured as a direct labor cost, a flat technology fee covering systems, tools, and secure access, and a standardized operations fee covering offices, HR, and infrastructure. You know exactly what each role costs and how those costs behave as you grow.

Cost Structure That Scales Cleanly

Technology costs remain fixed per team member. Operations scale proportionally with team growth. No variable infrastructure costs or unexpected overhead. You can forecast staffing costs accurately as you add roles, change roles, or scale into new functions.

Built-In Infrastructure Leverage

By operating on ITBD’s infrastructure, you avoid standing up global offices, HR departments, IT systems, and compliance frameworks on your own. Your teams benefit from enterprise-grade systems from day one. The overhead is shared across ITBD’s platform rather than duplicated by each MSP.

Self-managed global teams give MSPs clear cost visibility, predictable scaling economics, and access to enterprise-grade infrastructure, while keeping full ownership of team leadership and outcomes. This is how MSPs scale global teams without taking on the risk and overhead of running global operations themselves.

ROLES AND FUNCTIONS YOU CAN BUILD

Build Teams Across Your Entire Organization

In the self-managed model, you’re not limited to engineering. You can build teams across nearly any function in your organization, provided you have the internal leadership to manage those roles effectively. Most MSPs start with delivery and expand from there as they grow.

The breadth of what you build depends on your internal leadership capacity. If you have leaders who can define priorities, manage performance, and maintain accountability, the model supports virtually any function. The structure is flexible. The responsibility is yours.

    TEAM STRUCTURE AND LEADERSHIP

Structure Is What Protects Performance at Scale

Self-managed teams are designed to operate as structured teams, not as independent contributors scattered across a floor. Because your MSP owns performance in this model, the leadership structure you put in place is what makes or breaks the results.

    Minimum Team Scale

Built for MSPs planning 10+ team members within the first six months. This ensures teams are large enough to justify structured leadership and sustain real collaboration.

    Dedicated Team Leadership

One team lead for approximately every 10 team members. Can be an existing MSP leader or a role hired specifically for this purpose. Clear reporting lines prevent fragmentation.

    Collaboration by Design

Teams work from shared, in-office environments aligned by function. Real-time collaboration, faster problem-solving, cross-training, and clear accountability happen naturally.

    Scalable Structure

As you continue scaling, additional team leads are added, functions group under centralized oversight, and structure evolves from team-based growth to platform-level organization.

Leadership and structure are what separate sustainable scale from uncontrolled growth. Self-managed teams succeed when accountability is clear, roles are defined, leadership is present, and collaboration is intentional. The structure isn't optional. It's what protects performance as teams expand.

    ONBOARDING

    Structured Start, Clear Responsibilities

Even in a self-managed model, onboarding isn’t improvised. IT By Design handles the operational and employment side, so your team members start in a secure, compliant, professional environment from day one. Your MSP handles the role-specific direction and leadership that gets them integrated into how you work.

    IT By Design Handles

    Your MSP Handles

Ongoing support from ITBD: Dedicated HR Business Partner involvement, employee relations support, career development planning, and talent acquisition support for expansion or backfill. While your MSP manages performance, ITBD provides the operational support that keeps teams stable and engaged over time.

    SCALING TO PLATFORM LEVEL

    Built for Platform-Style Operations

As MSPs grow beyond single-team expansion, they often need to centralize functions, standardize processes, and operate across multiple teams or even multiple brands. The self-managed model supports that shift without requiring you to build new infrastructure every time you grow.

    Centralized Structure

Multiple delivery teams under shared oversight. Centralized finance, HR, ops, sales, marketing, QA, and governance. Less duplication across the organization and more consistency in how things get done.

    Scale Without Overhead

Teams operate within ITBD’s established offices and compliance framework. No need to build your own global offices, HR department, or compliance infrastructure. Growth doesn’t introduce new operational overhead.

    Profitability at Scale

Expand headcount without rebuilding infrastructure. Maintain predictable cost growth. Centralize roles instead of duplicating them. Preserve margin while increasing operational scope. Structure and profitability grow together.

At platform level, scale only works if cost structure remains disciplined. The self-managed model allows MSPs to transition from team growth to platform-level organization while maintaining cost predictability, operational discipline, and leadership ownership at every stage.

    FAQs

Common Questions About the Self-Managed Model
Is there a minimum team size?
Yes. The self-managed model is designed for MSPs building a minimum of approximately 10 global team members and planning to reach that scale within the first six months. This threshold ensures the team structure and leadership model can operate effectively.
Who manages the team day to day
Your MSP manages the team directly. You define priorities, KPIs, and performance standards. IT By Design does not manage delivery outcomes or SLAs in this model. Your leadership owns results.
Do I need to hire a team lead?

How is this different from co-managed?
